Country music gives a visit to Carthage a natural starting point. Come for the museum, check for a show downtown, and leave room for a walk or a park stop. There's enough here to make a day of it without rushing from one place to the next.
What's happening
Start with Carthage events on East Texan. We're still building coverage here, so keep the Main Street calendar and Panola County community calendar handy too. Main Street publishes downtown gatherings and Esquire Theater shows. The chamber's calendar reaches across the county, so check each listing's address before heading out.
The Texas Country Music Hall of Fame also publishes its festival and showcase information. Choose a current announcement when planning a visit around music; the museum and a concert at the Civic Center are separate stops with their own schedules.
A few places to start
- Texas Country Music Hall of Fame and Tex Ritter Museum: the museum is at 310 W. Panola Street. It follows Tex Ritter's career and other Texas country musicians, including a Jim Reeves display with equipment from his Henderson radio station. Leave time for the exhibits, then check the museum's own page for visiting hours and admission.
- Esquire Theater: the city's venue page places this downtown theater at 116 W. Sabine Street. Country Music Hayride is part of its story, while the Main Street calendar also lists plays and other shows. Pick the individual performance for tickets and details, and browse the Main Street directory for a nearby meal or shop stop.
- City Nature Trail and parks: the city walking trail is on Ballpark Drive in the City Municipal Park. Its three-quarter-mile route passes through mature oaks and pines. For playground time or a picnic, the parks department lists Davis Park at 200 Community Drive and College View Park at 251 Jessie Drive, designed for different ages and abilities.
- Lake Murvaul, outside town: this is a separate drive into Panola County. Texas Parks and Wildlife places the lake west of Carthage and links public access facilities and fishing information. Start there to choose an access point before setting out for time by the water.
Keep these links handy
Sammy Brown Library, at 319 S. Market Street, has its own calendar of storytimes and programs, plus library services and resources. The Panola County Chamber publishes a seasonal pocket guide and community information.
These resources were checked October 3, 2026. Neighbors' suggestions can help fill in the everyday places this first guide hasn't reached yet.
