Henderson offers a few different ways to spend a day in Rusk County. You can start among downtown's old storefronts, make time for a play or some local history, then leave the afternoon open for a walk by the water. Come for an event, or use these places to begin finding your way around.
What's happening
Start with Henderson events on East Texan. The city calendar has several categories, including local events and Civic Center activities. The city's events page is another useful stop for community celebrations.
The 2026 Heritage Syrup Festival is November 14, confirmed by both the city and the Depot Museum's events page. The tradition brings syrup-making demonstrations and folk crafts to the museum grounds, with more activities downtown. The tourism festival page explains how those two parts fit together. Leave room in the day for both if you're coming for the festival.
A few places to start
- Downtown and Main Street: Restored buildings hold shops, restaurants, antiques, and collectibles. A wander through downtown can be the whole outing, or the beginning of one. Leave yourself time to look around instead of filling every hour with a separate stop.
- Depot Museum and History Center: At 514 N. High Street, the museum shares Rusk County history through artifacts and preserved buildings. The Children's Discovery Center adds hands-on activities in the old railroad depot. Its website has visitor information and a separate page for programs, so a museum visit can grow into an event day.
- Henderson Civic Theatre: The theatre is at 122 E. Main Street. Its own website is the place to find productions, tickets, and ways to help. Pair a performance with a downtown meal if you want to make an evening of it.
An afternoon outside
Lake Forest Park has walking trails, playground equipment, fishing piers, and a nine-hole disc golf course. The park also has picnic pavilions and public restrooms. It's a useful place to build a quieter stretch into your day, whether that means a walk, a picnic, or bringing your discs. The city's park page has details for pavilion rentals.
Keep these links handy
The tourism department's dining directory and lodging directory can help with the rest of the trip. Check the address when choosing a place; the lodging collection includes some surrounding towns, too.
These resources were checked October 3, 2026. This is a beginning, with room for neighbors to add the gathering places and small traditions they know.
