Athens gives you several ways to put a day together in Henderson County. You could begin downtown, take a walk in the arboretum, or spend an afternoon learning about freshwater fish. A community theatre performance can turn that day into an evening, too. Choose a couple of stops and leave room to enjoy them.
What's happening
Start with Athens events on East Texan. The city's tourism calendar is another place to check, alongside calendars from the people hosting an event. The East Texas Arboretum and Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center publish their own program information.
The Henderson County Performing Arts Center currently lists Misery for October 22–25, 2026, with a mature-audience recommendation. Its site has the season, ticket links, and opportunities to take part. The theatre is at 400 Gibson Road. Its visit page includes accessibility information, including wheelchair seating and assisted listening devices. Pair a show with a meal in town if you'd like to make an evening of it.
A few places to start
- Downtown Athens: The tourism department points to downtown shopping and art galleries, with restaurant and hotel directories for planning the rest of a visit. Give yourself time to explore before moving on to an activity elsewhere in town.
- East Texas Arboretum: At 1601 Patterson Road, the arboretum combines gardens, woodland trails, and heritage exhibits. The Wofford House adds a look at early Henderson County life. Its trail page distinguishes rugged nature trails from the paved portion and links an interpretation guide. That can help you choose a walk that fits your afternoon.
Fish, exhibits, and a wetlands walk
The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is at 5550 FM 2495, a separate stop from downtown. TPWD's current visitor information lists fishing, gallery tanks, hatchery talks, and a wetlands trail. Loaner fishing equipment is available through the center. Its activity page explains the fishing arrangements and notes that stationary hatchery talks replace tram tours until summer 2027 while pond work continues. Use the operator's current visitor information when planning around a particular activity.
