Longview is the practical center of gravity for Northeast Texas — big enough to have everything you need, small enough that you'll run into someone you know at the store. It grew up around the railroad in 1870 and came into real money when the East Texas Oil Field turned the whole region into a boomtown in the 1930s.
Why go
If you're exploring East Texas, Longview is the natural base camp: it's at the crossroads of I-20 and US-259, within an easy drive of Tyler, Marshall, Jefferson, Kilgore, and a handful of lakes. The downtown has spent the last several years coming back to life with restaurants, shops, and events.
What to do
- The Great Texas Balloon Race — the marquee summer event, with dozens of hot-air balloons lifting off at dawn and dusk.
- Downtown Longview — walkable blocks of local restaurants, coffee, and the kind of small shops worth a Saturday.
- Gregg County Historical Museum — the railroad-and-oil story in the old Everett building.
- Lake day — Lake o' the Pines and Lake Cherokee are both a short drive for fishing and boating.
Where to eat
Downtown is the move for local spots; the rest of town has the full spread of Texas standbys — barbecue, Tex-Mex, and meat-and-threes.

A little history
The railroad made Longview; oil made it boom. When the East Texas field came in, the region became one of the most productive oil patches on earth, and Longview was right in the middle of it. That history still shapes the place — and the lakes, forests, and small towns around it are the reason it makes such a good home base.
